Our Staff

At Summit Surgical we understand how stressful having surgery can be. The entire staff place patient care and customer service at the top of our priorities. Our staff consists of a skilled, trained and knowledgeable care team dedicated to making your surgical experience as comfortable as possible. Our Medical Staff are all certified Registered Nurses, Vascular Technologists and Medical Assistants with over 182 years of combined medical experience. Whether it's insurance issues, billing assistance, or post op care, we are here to answer all of your questions and concerns.

Bryan McVay, M.D.

Bryan McVay, M.D. - Summit Surgical Specialists - Eugene, Oregon

Dr. McVay was born and raised in Hillsboro, Oregon. Graduating from Hillsboro High School, he proceeded with undergraduate education at Portland State University. Dr. McVay attended Oregon Health & Science University for medical school and completed General Surgery Internship and Residency with The Guthrie Clinic in Sayre, Pennsylvania. Dr. McVay enjoys sharing time with his children Connor and Carson, his son and daughter who attend South Eugene High School. They, as well as his wife Darla, enjoy many activities that Oregon offers with its wonderful natural areas. When not in clinic or the OR, you might find Dr. McVay fly fishing for trout in the McKenzie, brewing beer or hiking Mt. Baldy.


Thomas Stites, M.D.

Thomas Stites, M.D. - Summit Surgical Specialists - Eugene, Oregon

Dr. Stites core beliefs toward practicing medicine include educating and communicating well with patients to provide excellent patient care. He enjoys the breadth of general surgery from consultation to operation.

Dr. Stites earned his medical degree from the University of Louisville in 2002. He completed his residency at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Stites is a board-certified general surgeon with an expertise in hernia repair, breast surgery, minimally invasive surgery, anti-reflux and pediatric surgery.

In his free time, Dr. Stites enjoys hiking, mountaineering and basketball.


John M. Terhes, M.D.

John M. Terhes, M.D. - Summit Surgical Specialists - Eugene, Oregon

Dr. Terhes graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in chemistry and biochemistry before earning his medical degree from Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon in 1998. He completed his internship and general surgery residency at Oregon Health and Science University. A board-certified general surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Terhes is also the current Chief-of-Staff at McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center. His area of expertise includes thyroid/parathyroid surgery and a wide range of general surgery.

Dr. Terhes' personal philosophy towards practicing medicine relies on providing individualized personal care. He prides himself on taking the extra time to educate each patient before treating their surgical needs.

Dr. Terhes is an avid sportsman with special interests in college and professional football and baseball. He enjoys spending time with his wife, and two children. Dr. Terhes is a 4-year letterman with the University of Washington baseball team, as well as first team All-Pac 10 academic pitcher in 1992. He is also a member of the Alpha-Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.


Joe Viramontes, Jr., M.D.

Joe Viramontes, Jr., M.D. - Summit Surgical Specialists - Eugene, Oregon

Dr. Viramontes believes in the importance of establishing a partnership and personal relationship with his patients to provide complete and comprehensive vascular care. To him, the most gratifying part of being a surgeon is educating his patients to make meaningful changes to lead healthy, productive and happy lives.

Dr. Viramontes is a board-certified vascular and general surgeon. He specializes in all aspects of vascular/endovascular surgery as well as minimally invasive vein surgery. Dr. Viramontes earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1999. He completed his surgical internship at the King-Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles and his general surgery residency at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California. His fellowship in vascular and endovascular surgery was completed at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Dr. Viramontes is a member of the Society for Vascular Ultrasound, American Medical Association, and Society for Vascular Surgery, and is also a candidate for the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Viramontes' personal interests include international travel, snorkeling, tennis, woodcrafts, theater and spending time with his wife and two children. Dr. Viramontes is bilingual in Spanish.


Ian R. White, M.D.

Ian R. White, M.D. - Summit Surgical Specialists - Eugene, Oregon

After completing his undergraduate at Rice University with a double major in Biochemistry and English, Dr. White attended medical school at Oregon Health & Science University. He fell in love with Oregon and stayed on at Oregon Health & Science University for his general surgery residency plus a year of clinical research. He then went to Salt Lake City, Utah where he completed a fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at St Mark's hospital where he specialized in diagnosing and treating diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus.

His areas of clinical interest include robotic and advanced minimally invasive surgical treatment of colon and rectal cancer, diseases of the pelvic floor including rectal prolapse and fecal incontinence, Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis, and diverticular disease. He also specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of benign anorectal diseases such as anal fistulas, fissures, and hemorrhoids.

Dr. White believes that the patient-physician relationship is of the utmost importance and is based on the same principles as all good relationships: trust, mutual respect, and exceptional communication. From consultation to post-operative care, Dr. White believes that every patient should be empowered through education to help them actively participate in making the best, most individualized plan of care possible.

In his spare time Dr. White enjoys international travel as well as all things outdoors including backcountry snowboarding, mountaineering, mountain biking, surfing, hiking/camping, and road biking.


Lauren Kendall, PA-C

Lauren Kendall, PA-C - Summit Surgical Specialists - Eugene, Oregon

Lauren believes that the key to providing excellent patient care is communication with patients and their families. She strives to develop long term relationships with her patients and enjoys educating them about what to expect in the pre and postoperative period as well as collaborating with them to institute lifestyle changes to improve their health.

Lauren attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she was accepted to the Physician Assistant program while completing her undergraduate degree. She graduated with her Bachelors in Biomedical Sciences in 2012 and with her Masters of Physician Assistant Studies in 2013. She then worked for 2 years in Abdominal Transplant Surgery before relocating to Eugene to join the Summit Surgical Team. Lauren is also a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

Lauren and her husband enjoy all that Oregon has to offer including hiking, fishing, camping, biking, and many more outdoor activities. Other personal interests include music, photography, the Green Bay Packers, and her dog Millie.
